Every now and then, without trying, at least once a week, my brain arrives at an idea. I’m going to try and share it here. Note that I’m not calling this a “creative” idea. That’s because it’s just novel at this point. I haven’t done the hard work of seeing if it works, of improving it, of trying to implement. So, caveats in place, here’s the idea.
Perhaps the way to stop people from texting and driving – one of the most extremely dangerous and stupid things people are doing these days – is to have the insurance companies be the enforcers. All new polices shall now have an amendment, a clause, that reads something like this: reading or writing a text message while driving will void this insurance. Any accident that occurs while the driver is texting is 100% not covered.
Is this too harsh? I don’t think so (but, of course, that’s one man’s opinion). Would it work? Well, nothing stops stupid and selfish behavior outright. But it just might make a dent in it. Insurance companies, you may have this idea. No charge.
